Bhubaneswar: Odisha Government has approved the opening of seven special units named Investigating Units for Crimes Against Women (IUCAW) in seven police districts to expedite probe into violence against women and monitor legal action against the accused. This decision was taken at a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the state secretariat. It has also been decided to keep one-third of the total posts in IUCAWs reserved for women. The units will consist of 105 policemen with one additional superintendent of police (ASP), four deputy superintendents of police (DSPs), four Inspectors, four sub inspectors (SIs) and four constables in each unit. These will work at Bhubaneswar, Baleswar, Sambalpur, Rourkela, Brahmapur, Mayurbhanj and Angul. Apart from investigating into the crimes against women, these units will take measures to curb such crimes, collect intelligence inputs, curb organised crimes, monitor functioning of legal provisions and raise awareness among the people.
