It came as a double delight for the flourishing chess fraternity in the state as Odisha’s chess icon and International Master Padmini Rout bagged gold medal in the women`s category of the Commonwealth Chess Championship, while emerging master Saina Salonika bagged the silver medal in under-12 girls category of the same event held at Hotel Park Plaza in New Delhi from June 23 to 30, 2015.
Playing in the top category, with 298 players participating from 11 countries, Padmini won her first gold medal in Commonwealth Chess Championship with seven points out of a possible nine. Padmini remained unbeaten till the end, while winning five games and drawing the remaining four. The event witnessed participation of 79 titled players including 17 Grandmasters, six Women Grandmasters and 22 International Masters.
In the under-12 girls category Saina Salonika finished second with 5.5 points out of a possible seven and bagged the silver.
